life in january

Nothing says January like getting your teeth cleaned :) But it's so much easier than trying to fit it in during the school year!
We enjoyed a park Date with my best friend from Florida and her twins πŸ’™πŸ©· The kids loved showing them one of our favorite parks and I enjoyed the time to catch up with Daleth.
We didn’t get a mom pic at the park, so we opted for one at home instead. But why we are so squinty in all the pics, I have no idea. (And yes, I still had my decorations up on the 4th 😜)
We enjoyed more playtime at home and dinner/games with Kevin ❤️ Tellestrations is always good for a laugh πŸ˜‚
We took down all the decorations on Friday, with the exception of the big tree since the kids really wanted to have a sleepover in the living room🌲 Brooke ended up in her room because she couldn’t fall asleep, but it seemed like a magical idea ✨ Colby also reported that he was cold all night (despite having his comforter), so I guess that won’t be making the list of holiday traditions!
Colby asked if I would take a picture of his tank before he erased it...
I don't remember any details about this boat ride, but it was obviously chilly based on Kevin's choice of hat :)
I'm guessing we pulled the boat out of the marina at night and drove it up to Flower Mound the next day to tuck it away before the big freeze...
I’m so proud of this brave girl 🩷 She missed the first day of basketball tryouts when she was sick, but due to a misleading email, I took her on Wednesday at 7 AM to try out since she was on the original participant list. She was super unsure about the whole situation once we arrived at the gym (long story), but eventually went in with 2 girls she knew from Daulton. I was dying to know how it went, so I went up to the school to have lunch with her so I didn’t have to wait until 4 PM. Turns out they already had first cuts at the practice she missed, so they sent her to the second gym to play with the Sports Club kids 😳 I hated that she had to experience that embarrassing situation (calling out names from a list she wasn’t on), but she was resilient and took it in stride. And now she wants to join Sports Club πŸ˜‚

As her Mama, I just want to protect her from anything hard, but I know this was such a good learning experience for her. And I’m just proud of her grit and confidence 🩷
A quick after-school play date with the Byrd triplets before the winter weather arrived πŸ₯Ά
My boy earned his 10 mile charm 🧑 He doesn’t love running and he especially doesn’t love running when they have to do it inside the gym, but he stuck to his goal and I’m super proud of him! He wore that necklace for 24 hours straight πŸ™ŒπŸ»
Brooke has been decorating her dollhouse and decided to take "family pictures" so we could print them to hang up inside the house.  We never did get around to printing them, but I love that her favorite barbie family is documented.
Camp Meador was in full swing over here πŸ˜‚ While Brooke and I were gone, the boys set up all our camp mats and sleeping bags and built us a fire for ambiance πŸ”₯ It’s was supposed to get super cold this weekend with possible snow on Monday, so we were ready!

*Colby and I also put together our new patio bench this morning, hence the reason it was still in the living room 😜
It was a whopping 16 degrees yesterday after church, but the kids kept telling me it “really wasn’t that cold.” Brooke even expressed that it was “refreshing”, haha. But I did love our matching hues πŸ–€ πŸ’› And she admitted that it was only “refreshing” for the first two minutes πŸ˜‚

*My porch looks so bare, but the other plants were tucked away in the garage to avoid the freeze!
The kids slept in their fort that night and woke up excited to go play in the snow!
Snow Day ❄️ We played outside twice, and I most definitely used hand and foot warmers on outing #2! ’m not made for “13 degrees, Feels like -1” πŸ₯Ά
Not sure if this was Colby or Carter’s idea, but they were both pretty excited about it πŸ˜‚ The perks of having a teenage neighbor πŸ™ŒπŸ»
The snow was so beautiful, but I’m sure glad we don’t deal with this on a consistent basis. School was cancelled the next day even though the roads seemed clear, so we had another play day 😜 After my kids cleaned their bathrooms!
Our lunch dates are fewer and far between now that I’m working and they alternate parent lunch days every 6 weeks, but it’s always good to connect mid-day ❤️

*It was SO cold that morning, hence his beanie hair πŸ˜‚
Kevin had the best kitchen helpers on Saturday ❤️ Andre had the kids that weekend and reached out asking if he could stay with us since he was traveling in from Georgia.
Brooke printed the recipe and had each ingredient delegated to whoever was going to measure or chop it πŸ˜‚ We’ll definitely be repeating it because the steak marinade was 10/10!!

The kids spent the rest of the weekend playing outside on the trampoline, playing in the house, joining us for a Home Depot outing, eating brownies and ice cream for an early birthday celebration, playing games, and making breakfast waffles together ❤️
We celebrated my sweet niece’s birthday on Sunday 🩷 Can’t believe Kinley is almost 12!!
The kids put on a “Barbie Rock Show”, which was clever but kinda funny that all the adults sat around staring at Barbie’s while Brooke did the lighting πŸ˜‚
Colby came down with something, so I stayed home from work to take care of him.  He mostly slept, so I was able to get started on the 67 posts I needed to write for our blog 😜 I was so disappointed in myself that I didn’t blog at all last year, and I was pretty overwhelmed with the idea of catching up. But I was hopeful that if I broke it down into manageable chunks, I could do it. So during the snow days last week, I got a jump start on organizing all my pictures. Then in the evenings, I sorted the pictures into posts, and eventually uploaded them all into drafts.
It was crazy that we were already prepping for 6th grade in January, but Brookie had her “Instrument Evaluation” near the end of the month 🎡 She went into it wanting to play the flute and left feeling about the same…but she did really well with everything! The HS band director was assessing for the brass instruments and was “pleasantly surprised” with how well Brooke did with the tuba, so we weren't sure what she would get when her “Golden Ticket” arrived ❤️
Spoiler Alert: She was chosen for the tuba, but at that point, she had already decided to join the orchestra instead.

Colby was enjoying his new skateboard and had a goal to go straight down the driveway. Honestly, that made me pretty nervous, but he finally had the courage to do it πŸ™ŒπŸ» He then wanted me to try, which was a definite NO for me πŸ˜‚ Now he goes down like it’s no big deal!  Watching kids conquer fears and try new things is the best!
After a week of rain, the sunshine came out and felt like a dream! We spent some time at the skate park (no pics, but I was proud of Colby for getting out there with the teenagers!), and ended at the monkey bars ☀️
January felt long with all the changes in weather and schedules, but we made some great memories as a family!
